“I Am...

The True Vine”

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.”

(Jn. 15:1)

Our final self-portrait of Jesus is one which again ties together all the previous descriptions we have studied. In this final claim of Jesus He demonstrates that He is the source of man’s spiritual sustenance, stating that He is the Vine. Jesus as the Vine is the source through which man can spiritually live and bear fruit. As Jesus Himself states, a branch cannot survive apart from the vine. Our spiritual survival is dependant upon His provisions. Just as branches pruned away from the life-giving plant will dry out and die, so it is with those who break away, or become pruned by the Father—without the Way, Truth, and Life they too will spiritually dry up die. David understood this, and expressed the thought well as he considered his sin separating him from God.

3 When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long.

4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me;

My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. Selah.

Psalm 32:3,4 (Emphasis mine)

It is my hope that this study will serve to remind each of us of our total need for God. That it will encourage us to always look to Him for things that we need.

Scriptures: Mk. 11:12-14; Jn. 15:1-17; Gal. 5:22-23; Col. 1:10

Questions:

1. What relationship does the Vine have to the branches?

2. What is done with the branches that bear no fruit?

3. How is the Father glorified (Jn. 15:8)?

4. What types of fruit can (or should) we bear?

5. If we are not bearing fruit, what might it say about our

relationship to the Vine?

6. What are some things that prevent us from bearing fruit?

7. How can the command of John 15:17 be a source for

bearing much fruit?

Thought for the week:

What areas in my life need pruning?
