“I Am...

The Way”

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (Jn. 14:6)

A traveler hired a guide to take him across a desert area. When the two men arrived at the edge of the desert, the traveler, looking ahead, saw before him no road, path, or marker of any kind. He asked his guide, “Where is the road?” The experienced guide turned to the man and said, “I am the road.” So too, is Jesus as we journey through the unfamiliar territory of this life.

What Then?

On graduation night, a father asked, “Son, what are your plans?”

The boy answered, “Dad, you know I’m going to college.”

The dad said, “That’s right, but what then?”

The boy replied, “Well, I’ll want to get a good job, and hopefully get married.”

The dad said, “That is also fine, but what then?”

The boy answered, “I want to have some kids. Then, after I put the required years on the job, I’ll retire.”

The father replied, “That’s good, but what then?”

And the boy said, “Well... uh... I don’t know... I guess I’ll get old and die.”

The dad said, “That’s right, what then?”

And the boy dropped his head as he realized he had plans for life on earth, but no plans for life beyond this world.

The Bible teaches that it is appointed unto man once to die, and after this the judgement (Heb. 9:27). What then?¹

That simple story illustrates a truth common in many people. We make all kinds of plans for our journey through this life, but often fail to consider the way of eternity. We need to be reminded that Jesus is the way... through this life, and the life to come.

Thought for the week:

If Jesus is “The Way”, what does that say about man’s ways?
