“I Am... The Truth” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (Jn. 14:6) As Pilate questioned Jesus, trying to determine how to best respond to the threatening demands of a riotous and angry group of people; a mob bent on having Jesus put to death; He asked the question that men have been asking for years: “What is truth?” (Jn. 19:38). One gets the impression that Pilate was not really interested in knowing what truth is; there is a tone of cynicism in his question. It is as if Pilate is saying as many have said, “There is no such thing as truth!” What is truth? Is there such a thing? Is truth absolute or is it as many suggest and believe... all relative? Whether man wants to admit it or not, there is such a thing as absolute truth—thusly, there is a right and a wrong. Perhaps it is man’s realization of this ‘truth’ that causes him to want to believe there is really no such thing as truth. By denying the existence of truth, man (in his mind) saves himself from condemnation. Man needs to understand that truth is not always pleasant and is not always what he wants (despite the need) to hear. However, truth does not (and cannot) change according to our ability to handle it! In view of man’s on-going debate over the existence of truth, our portrait of Jesus in this lesson is all the more interesting, insightful, and needful. Jesus said, “I am the Truth.” Scriptures: Jn. 8:31, 32; 14:6; 19:28-38; Rom. 1:18ff; 1 Tim. 3:15
Questions: 1. How is truth often viewed today? 2. Can truth be relative and still be truth? 3. How do you teach the absolute truth of the gospel to a generation who views truth as being relative? 4. Describe the actions of those Paul describes in Rom. 1:18- 25; does man do the same today? How? Why? 5. What does Jesus mean when He says “I am the Truth”? How will truth set one free? (Jn. 8:31, 32) 6. If Jesus is the truth, what does that say about the enemy? (cf. Jn. 8:44) 7. How does Paul describe the church? (1 Tim. 3:15) What responsibility does this place upon us? 8. How does this picture of Jesus (truth) relate to the previous title we discussed (the way)?
Thought for the week: If Jesus is “The Truth”, what does that say about His word... His faithfulness... His promises? |
